What is smudging?
Smudging is a cultural ceremony practiced by a wide variety of Indigenous people in Canada and other parts of the world. Smudging is the practice of burning various medicinal plants to cleanse ourselves and connect us with our spirit.
It may also be used to cleanse, purify, and bless the part of our mother earth. For example, we may smudge around our homes to purify or bless special objects like ceremonial objects or totems, such as jewelry, or clothing. When you smudge your home, start from the left side of the walls, windows, doorways, and corners of the room and open the window and door to let negative energies out.
Sage is most often used in most smudging ceremonies. However, traditional teachers and knowledge keepers from various Indigenous Nations will have more specific teachings that go with each medicine.
How to smudge or cleanse yourself: Step By Step
- Draw the smoke over your head then to your eyes so that you may be able to see the truth around us, the beauty of our mother earth, and the gifts given to us by our Creator.
- Draw the smoke over your ears to cleanse them so they will be open to the request of assistance from others, hear only the good things and allow the bad to bounce off and hear the music of life which surrounds us.
- Draw the smoke to cleanse your mouth so that all we speak will be truthful, speak in a way that will empower positive, caring, and kind words that are full of thanksgiving for our Creator.
- Draw smoke down the front of your body and to the back then to your heart.
- Draw smoke to cleanse your heart so that your heart will feel the love the Creator intended for others so you can grow with harmony and balance. To be good and pure, be opened to show compassion, gentleness and caring for others.
- Draw smoke to cleanse our feet so that our feet will seek to walk gently and respectfully upon Mother Earth, walk closer to our loved ones, friends and community and help us flee our enemies and lead us closer to Creator.

For Plated Jewelry:
How to care for your plated jewlery to prevent tarnishing
1. KEEP IT DRY
The fastest way to tarnish your jewelry is by contact with moisture and liquids. This includes putting on lotions, washing your hands, perfume, and sweating with your jewels on. Even the oils on your skin can wear down the plating and metals over time - and this will again vary from person to person. Get your jewels wet by accident? Be sure to wipe and dry them off right away.
2. STORE IT PROPERLY
Because exposure to the simplest things like the moisture in the air can wear down your jewels, it's important to store them properly.
Take it up a level by storing your jewels in a plastic bag - but you'll want to make sure you get rid of as much air as possible before sealing it. With the air removed, the metal won't be able to oxidize from the air.
Super keen on keeping your favorite pieces in tip top shape? Get some 3M anti-tarnish strips. These super absorbent pieces of paper will basically suck all of the culprits in the surrounding air that will cause your jewelry to tarnish over time. Stick one in your jewelry drawer, jewelry box or storage pouch.
3. GIVE IT A BREAK
Treat your jewelry with love and care, and they'll keep up with you for a long time!
For cotton apparel or tote bags:
To prevent shrinking and wrinkling, always wash 100% cotton in cold water using a gentle cycle. And let the clothes dry naturally by hanging them on a clothing line outside or laying them down on a towel in the laundry room. Warm or hot water can melt fibers and dyes and also damage fabrics so please keep this in mind while taking care of your items!
For cotton hats:
Dampen a soft toothbrush or a cloth in warm water and gently rub it on spots that need a clean. Never machine wash as this will damage the brim of the hat.
